I.V. sets

An I.V. Set is a medical device used to administer fluids, medications and nutrients directly into a patient's bloodstream through a vein. This procedure is commonly referred to as "placing an intravenous line" or "putting in an IV".

An I. V. set typically includes:

Needle: a sterile device that is inserted into the patient's vein to allow access to the vascular system.‍

Intravenous catheter: once the needle has entered the vein, it is removed leaving the catheter in place to facilitate the continuous administration of fluids.

Tourniquet: an elastic band placed around the patient's arm to increase venous pressure and facilitate the location of a suitable vein for needle insertion.

Tubing and connectors: used to connect the intravenous catheter to the bag or bottle containing the fluid to be administered.

Intravenous solution: the solution administered may be physiological saline solution, saline solution, glucose solutions, diluted medications, among others, depending on the patient's needs.

An I.V. set is used in a variety of clinical situations, such as drug administration, rehydration or nutrient management. It is important that this procedure is performed correctly to avoid complications such as infection or fluid extravasation. Therefore, it is usually performed by trained medical or nursing personnel.
